Logan Thomas Bio

Logan Thomas is a tight end for the Washington Commanders. Attending Brookville High School in Lynchburg, Virginia, he played quarterback, wide receiver, tight end and defensive back. One of the country’s top tight end prospects, Thomas accepted a scholarship to play at nearby Virginia Tech, choosing the Hokies over Penn State, Clemson, Florida State and others.

Wanting to play tight end in college, after a redshirt 2009, VT coaches asked Logan Thomas to back up their ACC Player of the Year, quarterback Tyrod Taylor. When Taylor left after the 2010 season, Thomas became VT’s dual-threat starting quarterback, combining for 30 touchdowns & 3,500 total yards in 2011. Despite starting only three seasons in Blacksburg, Thomas would set the school’s career marks in completions, passing yards and touchdowns.

Thomas checked all the boxes at the 2014 Combine, posting an 89th-percentile 40 time, 72nd-percentile burst & 86th-percentile agility. A giant of a quarterback at 6-6, 248 pounds, Arizona selected Thomas in the fourth round. Seeing 17 snaps as a rookie, Thomas attempted 9 passes, completing just one, an 81-yard TD strike to Andre Ellington. Before the 2015 season & sitting far behind Carson Palmer & Drew Stanton on the depth chart, the Cards released Thomas.

Following two stints in Miami in 2016 & being signed and released several times by the Giants, Thomas switched position to tight end & signed onto the Lions’ practice squad. Just two days later, though, Buffalo signed him away. When starter Charles Clay was injured mid-2017, Thomas saw his first action as an NFL tight end, even catching his first-ever touchdown from his old college teammate, Tyrod Taylor. In 2018, Thomas earned 17 targets and remainded third on the Bills’ depth chart. Released again, Thomas signed with Detroit but was relegated to special teams, again third in a team’s tight end snap share count.

Moving on again in 2020, Thomas landed in Washington. Now in his 7th season and on his 7th roster, Thomas didn’t just become relevant, he exploded onto the scene. Having seen 54 targets combined across six NFL seasons, he’d see 110 in 2020. His giant 10-7/8-inch hand size, tied for 4th-largest among tight ends and his plus athleticism made him a compelling target, finishing No. 6 in target share and No. 4 in red zone targets among tight ends. He'd lead NFL tight ends in snaps and routes run and finish top-10 in receptions, receiving yards, YAC and touchdowns for a No. 5 fantasy ranking. Signing a three-year contract extension heading into 2021, Thomas was injured in Week 4, spent 7 weeks on Injured Reserve and played two more games before being injured again and lost for the rest of the year.
