Journeyman Josh Dobbs Finds New Home in San Francisco
8 months ago

The 49ers have agreed to a one-year deal with veteran QB Josh Dobbs.

“The Passtronaut” has a new home in the Bay Area with a one-year deal with 750K in-game incentives. Dobbs has been a fan favorite in the NFL since his impressive performance back in Week 17 of 2022 against the Jaguars. He had to fill in for an injured Ryan Tannehill and only had a few days to prepare for the game. Although the Titans ended up losing and missing the playoffs, Dobbs’ performance was good enough to land him a spot on the Cleveland roster the following year. He was later traded to the Cardinals in the offseason, where he filled in for Kyler Murray for 8 games and went 1-7 as a starter.

After Kirk Cousins suffered an Achilles injury, the Vikings traded for Dobbs, despite his previous failures in Arizona. Dobbs was once again called upon to play meaningful NFL snaps just days after joining the Vikings when Jaren Hall suffered a concussion. He performed well in the first two games but struggled in the next two, leading to a 2-2 record as a starter. Head Coach Kevin O’Connell ultimately decided to replace Dobbs due to poor quarterback play and boneheaded turnovers.

Dobbs will need an injury to get real playing time in San Francisco, but it is nothing we haven’t seen before.

Josh Dobbs To Start Week 1

Josh Dobbs has been named the starter for the Arizona Cardinals for Week 1 against the Washington Commanders, according to Ian Rapoport.

Just weeks after making the trade for him, the Cardinals have named Josh Dobbs their week 1 starter over rookie Clayton Tune. Dobbs started the final two games for the Tennessee Titans last year, totalling 411 yards, 2td/2int and two losses. Sending Dobbs out against one of the league’s top defenses in the Washington Commanders with this talent starved roster is going to be a tough task for Dobbs, so he better hope that he has that fire in his gut.

Like shuffling chairs on the Titanic, it ultimately doesn’t matter from a fantasy perspective. It might prove a slight upgrade for Marquise Brown, Trey McBride and Zach Ertz, at least over rookie Clayton Tune, but realistically it’s going to be a tough matchup no matter what. Dobbs has experience in the league which was more than likely the reason for giving him the nod, at least for week 1.

Browns Trade Dobbs to Cardinals, Shake Up QB Room
1 year ago

Browns Send Dobbs to Cardinals, Promote Thompson-Robinson to Backup QB.

The Cleveland Browns made a surprising move on Thursday, trading backup quarterback Joshua Dobbs to the Arizona Cardinals for a fifth-round pick in 2024. Dobbs, who had been named the team’s No. 2 quarterback by coach Kevin Stefanski earlier in the day, will join the Cardinals, who are looking for a temporary replacement for injured starter Kyler Murray.

The trade means that rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson, who has impressed in the preseason, will be promoted to backup behind Deshaun Watson, the Browns’ starting quarterback. Thompson-Robinson, a fifth-round pick from UCLA, has shown great potential and versatility in the Browns’ offense.

The Cardinals, on the other hand, are hoping that Dobbs can provide some stability and experience at the quarterback position while Murray recovers from knee surgery. Murray, having an MVP-caliber season before getting hurt, is expected to miss the entire 2023 season. Dobbs will compete with Colt McCoy, Clayton Tune, David Blough, and Jeff Driskel for the starting job in Arizona.
