Ty Johnson is a running back for the New York Jets. Born and raised in Maryland, Johnson played running back and defensive back at Fort Hill High School. His team won back-to-back 1A State Championships in his final two seasons. Johnson remained in the state to play college football with Maryland. Johnson rushed for 2,635 yards and 17 touchdowns at an absurd 7.6 yards per attempt during his four seasons with the Terrapins. He had 29 receptions during his college career, finishing with 318 yards and two scores. Johnson returned 48 kickoffs for a combined 1,194 yards and two scores. Overall, not terrible college stats.
Ty Johnson showed off his impressive speed leading up to the 2019 NFL Draft. He posted a 90th percentile 40 time of 4.45, contributing to an impressive 86th percentile Speed Score of 107.1. But Johnson also displayed only a slightly above average burst and a bottom third percentile BMI. The Detroit Lions selected Johnson with the 186th overall pick in the draft.
Johnson played in 15 games in his rookie season. But he was in on only 29.3 percent of the offensive snaps. He commanded a 26.3 percent opportunity share. Johnson caught 24 of 31 targets for 109 yards while committing two drops. He was released by the Lions early in the 2020 season and was claimed off waivers by the Jets. He played 11 games for his new team, earning 254 carries along the way while seeing 20 targets. Johnson amassed 353 total offensive yards that season, and was not helped with 29th ranked run blocking efficiency in the league.
In 2021 Johnson saw an increased role in the Jets offense. His snap share rose to 37.4 percent. He commanded 7.7 Weighted Opportunities per game. Johnson finished No.12 among all running backs with 372 receiving yards, seeing a 9.9 percent target share on 221 routes run, and led the position with 10.9 yards per reception. But he also led them in drops, putting ten passes on the ground. Still, Johnson was No.2 with a 6.4 yards per touch average and No.3 in yards created per touch. He only had 16 broken tackles all season but finished No.3 among all running backs with 3.85 yards created per touch. He was No.9 in fantasy points per opportunity. Johnson projects to have a late-round ADP in 2022.
