Cam Akers is a running back for the Los Angeles Rams. He played both running back and quarterback in high school in Clinton, Mississippi. Akers amassed a whopping 13,243 total yards and 149 touchdowns for Clinton High School. Akers played college football at Florida State, and rushing 586 rushing times for 2,875 yards and 27 touchdowns. He also added 69 receptions for 486 yards and another seven scores. Akers posted a 91stpercentile College Dominator Rating of 39.8-percent, as well as an 87th-percentile College Target Share of 12.3-percent. Akers showed off exceptional speed in the build up to the 2020 NFL Draft, clocking an 86th-percentile 40 time of 4.47 seconds. At 215-pounds, his size-adjusted 108.7 Speed Score is 90th-percentile. The Rams selected Akers with the 52nd overall pick in the Draft.
Akers wasn't exactly thrust into a workhorse role as a rookie. He played in 13 games but played only 32.5 percent of the offensive snaps. Akers rushed for 625 yards, showing the ability to make yards beyond what was blocked for him. He finished No.39 with 315 Yards Created and 2.1 broken tackles per game. Akers didn't exactly benefit from the offensive line in L.A., with the 28th-best Run Block Rating of 52.6. He also drew a disappointing 14 targets, amounting to a 3.1percent Target Share on 103 routes run.
Akers tore his Achilles in the 2021 preseason but, incredibly, was back on the active roster before the end of the season. He played just once in the regular season, carrying five times for three yards. He played a part in the Rams' successful postseason, but looked far from his best. Akers carried the ball 67 times for 172 scoreless yards and caught eight passes for 76 yards, giving him a woeful 3.3 Yards Per Touch. A full offseason without rehab, and yet it feels like we still have yet to see the full Cam Akers breakout. He had only two games where he finished the week as a top-ten fantasy scoring RB. Akers also spent some time away from the team, and both he and the Rams' leadership offered only cryptic communication his status with the team. Fortunately, he did return to the team and posted some quality performances. Without much competition on the roster, Cam looks headed to control the Rams backfield in 2023.
