Bengals coaches want Burton to earn trust through his practice habits and preparation.
Bengals 2024 3rd round pick Jermaine Burton has flashed big time ability throughout the Bengals preseason. Over the course of the Bengals 3 games, he has shown that his calling card as a deep threat at Alabama will translate, posting an 8/157/2 line while earning his QBs a 158.3 when targeted. There were red flags that caused him to fall to the 3rd round and those have caused the Bengals to keep him off of the field until his work ethic in practice and meetings provide the coaches with a level of trust in his reliability that seems to be lacking. It appears likely that the coaching staff will give him the latitude to grow into a higher level of accountability, but given the emergence of Andrei Iosivas and Charlie Jones, he will likely result in Burton having a “redshirt” year of sorts in 2024.
Burton’s value for 2024 is tied directly to the availability of wide receivers Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins in 2024. If they are both healthy, he was thought to potentially be fighting for Tyler Boyd’s slot targets, but due to his lack of preparation he will have to display it on the practice field and in the meeting rooms before he is able to earn a role on gameday. If anything happens to Chase or Higgins, he will become an interesting waiver add in all leagues.

Former Georgia and Alabama Receiver Jermaine Burton takes his deep speed to Cincinnati to aid Joe Burrow back to the Super Bowl.
Jermaine Burton was a part time player for the Georgia Bulldogs for his freshman and sophomore seasons, the latter being a National Championship team. Burton ended his Bulldog career with 53 catches, 901 receiving yards, and 8 touchdowns by transferring to Alabama for more playing time. In 2022, he led led the Tide with 677 receiving yards (40 receptions, 16.9 per, 7 TDs) in 13 games with 12 starts. Burton stayed for a senior year to lead the team with 798 receiving yards, 8 receiving TDs on 39 receptions (20.5 per). Burton has amazing speed to go with his average frame of 6’0″ and a 196 pounds, scoring a 91st percentile in the Burst Score at 132.0.
Quarterback Joe Burrow is smoking his cigar again with this pick. Burton will be an excellent WR3 on the team, with potential for more playing time next year when fellow WR Tee Higgins’ franchise tag contract expires. Burton can threaten deep on opposing defense to carry some coverage off of Higgins and star WR Ja’Marr Chase.
Burton will be a great buy in the late rounds of best ball drafts and a great rookie stash in dynasty. It’s hard to see him being consistent enough to draft in redrafts unless an injury happens to the aforementioned receivers.
