The Green Bay Packers have found their new Defensive Coordinator Jeff Hafley.
The Green Bay Packers are hiring former Boston College Head Coach Jeff Hafley for the Defensive Coordinator vacancy position. The Packers interviewed at least six candidates for the position, before, deciding to hire Jeff Hafley.
Hafley has had some NFL experience with Tampa Bay, Cleveland, and San Francisco before returning to college in 2019. Then Hafley help lead Ohio State’s defense to be one of the top-rated in the nation, before being hired as Boston College Head Coach a year later.
This will be Packers third DC under Matt LaFleur in six seasons. Hafley and LaFleur are long-time friends, even though they have never worked together. Hafley defense of scheme is mixed blended with college and pros, he will have fast, young, and talented players waiting for him.
The Green Bay Packers have fired their Defensive Coordinator Joe Barry
The Green Bay Packers have announced they will not retain Defensive Coordinator Joe Barry for another season. In his three-year stint as the Packers DC, Joe Barry’s defense ranked mostly in the back half of the league. This year was by far his best, where the Packers were ranked in the Top 10 in points allowed but still allowing teams the 17th most yards per game.
This move has been in question since the end of last season. While ending this year on a strong note some believe it was just enough to keep him around, but during a three-game stretch in December against Giants, Buccaneers, and Panthers, they made players like Tommy DeVito look like Pro Bowl caliber players. Baker Mayfield was nearly perfect in all aspects of the game finishing with 22/26 for 381 Yards passing and 4 touchdowns, and a perfect QB rating of 158.3. Finally, against the Panthers they made Bryce Young look like a contender for Rookie of the Year.
The Packers will have to look elsewhere to help this young, fast, and talented defense if they are going to make another playoff run next year.
