D.J. Matthews was a consensus four-star prospect that joined Florida State as a member of their 2017 recruiting class. During his three years at Florida State, he struggled to produce on an anemic offense as he totaled 84 receptions for 809 yards and five touchdowns in 32 career games, most notably playing behind Auden Tate and Tamorrion Terry. He did not play during the pandemic in 2020 and after graduating, transferred to Indiana.
Matthews suffered a torn ACL in 2021 after five games. Using his additional year of eligibility, he returned to Indiana for the 2022 season. Matthews was limited to nine games in 2022 and finished with a 23-224-2 stat line in his super-senior season. For his career, Matthews was a decent punt returner, averaging 10.5 yards per return on 65 career punt returns.
