Head Coach Jerod Mayo said he’s decided Jacoby Brissett gives the Patriots the best chance to win right now and will be the Patriots starter.
Mayo wouldn’t offer a timeline for when a potential changing of the guard might take place between rookie Drake Maye and Brissett. While they’ve always wanted Brissett to be the starter for the beginning of the season due to poor offensive line play that they don’t want to subject Maye to this early on in his career, Maye clearly outplayed Brissett in the preseason and made the decision harder than it had to be.
Brissett has struggled to produce any meaningful fantasy production throughout his career and has a record of 18-30 as a starter. It’s only a matter of time before he permanently cedes the starting role to Maye, who offers tremendous upside with his big arm and mobile play style. Brissett should be avoided in all formats and savvy fantasy managers shouldn’t be afraid to target Maye at his lowest cost right now before he’s inevitably named starter. For now, this news dampers the immediate outlook for all Patriots position players.
