What are Air Yards?

Air Yards measure how many yards the football travels past the line of scrimmage on a passing play. Some Air Yards come from completed passes and some are incomplete passes. They are not a perfect measurement of future fantasy success but a tool that we can utilize to help us make lineup decisions.

This season, we will parse through the Air Yards metric to help identify players who you should prioritize as starters in your fantasy lineups, players who disappointed but are likely to bounce back based on their Air Yards, and players you should feel free to fade despite voluminous Air Yards.

Air Yards Standouts Who Shined in Week 13

Jerry Jeudy | Cleveland Browns — 206 Air Yards (2nd Overall)

Jerry Jeudy melted faces Monday night posting an absurd 40.5 fantasy points securing nine receptions for 235 yards and a touchdown. Since Jameis Winston took over as the starter for the Browns, Jeudy has averaged 127 Air Yards per game on 10 targets per game. Jeudy is a no doubt starter for the fantasy playoffs stretch and has the ability to win you weeks as evidenced by his performance last week.

Parker Washington | Jacksonville Jaguars — 151 Air Yards (7th Overall)

Parker Washington exploded for 24.3 fantasy points last week after seeing 151 Air Yards on 12 targets. With Gabe Davis now out for the season, Washington is the Jaguars defacto WR2 opposite Brian Thomas Jr. Washington actually ran three more routes than BTJ last week despite seeing less snaps. Washington will be hard pressed to repeat this performance against a stout Tennessee Titans secondary in Week 14, however, with six teams on bye this week, you could do worse than Washington as a desperation flex play in PPR formats.

Brian Thomas Jr. | Jacksonville Jaguars— 143 Air Yards (2nd Overall)

While the aforementioned Parker Washington scored the most fantasy points among Jaguars receivers in Week 13, his teammate Brian Thomas Jr. led the Jaguars in Air Yards and still put up 18.7 fantasy points. Since breaking out in Week 4, BTJ has struggled to sustain success with Mac Jones throwing him the football.

From Week 4 until Trevor Lawrence‘s shoulder injury forced him to start missing games after Week 9, BTJ averaged 15.7 fantasy points per game and averaged 73 Air Yards per game. Since Week 9, and prior to last week, BTJ only averaged 8.6 fantasy points on 60 Air Yards per game. As long as BTJ’s sees 100 Air Yards, he should be primed for fantasy success regardless of who is throwing him the football.

Players Who Disappointed but Will Bounce Back

Calvin Ridley | Tennessee Titans — 138 Air Yards (11th Overall)

Would an Air Yards article be complete without discussing Calvin Ridley? The volatile Ridley had a down game in Week 13 posting only 6.5 fantasy points despite seeing seven targets and 138 Air Yards. Continue to ride the wave with Ridley this week especially in a great match up against the Jaguars secondary. Ridley’s rest of season outlook has him set to be a fantasy playoff league winner as he squares off against exploitable secondaries starting this week until Week 17.
