Lessons Learned
Let’s leave Week 1 in the dust. The breakout of Isaiah Likely, the injury to Jordan Love, Marvin Harrison Jr.‘s bust, and the triumphant return of JK Dobbins highlight the story lines entering Week 2. This weekly article will identify three players outside the top 50 projected FLEX starters who will “win” the FLEX. How do we define “winning” the FLEX position? If a player earns at least 12.5 points in half-point scoring, that’s a “win.” Anything less than that will be a loss. There will be one player outside the top 100 in projected points for the week which is my long-shot, double-or-nothing score. Throughout the season, I’ll both offer the players I think will “win” the FLEX each week and update how I did last week as part of accountability.
Week 1 Record: 1-2
Running Records 1-2 , 33%
Davante Adams – WR Las Vegas Raiders
Adams, the 56th projected player, is rostered in 97-percent of leagues but starting in 65-percent of them. He started the season with five receptions for 59 yards on six targets against the LA Chargers. While Adams didn’t put up massive numbers in his first week, his six targets accounted for 46-percent of the wide receiver targets for the Raiders. In 2023, Adams led all wide receivers with a 44.2-percent air yards share.
The Raiders stand to face a negative game script for fantasy football Week 2, as early lines suggest that the Ravens are more than nine-point favorites. Fire up Davante Adams as the Raiders will be pass-heavy and use Adams as a target hog.
J.K. Dobbins – RB LA Chargers
Carolina Panthers. Dobbins is back. Derrick Brown Out.
Dobbins, the 76th projected player, is rostered in 59-percent of leagues, but only started in 3-percent. The calculus is too simple. Coming back from major injuries is no stranger to Dobbins. Now, he’s on a run-first offense and earned 13 touches in his first game for the Chargers. Dobbins leads all running backs with 13.5 yards per carry going into Week 2.
Now, Dobbins gets the Carolina Panthers, who just allowed 47 total points to the New Orleans Saints in Week 1. The Chargers are favored by more than six points in this favorable matchup. To make matters worse for the Panthers, top defensive lineman Derrick Brown suffered a potential season-ending knee injury against the Saints.
Rhamondre Stevenson – RB New England Patriots
Much was made about whether the New England Patriots offense would be good enough for Stevenson to be fantasy relevant. Spoiler: It didn’t matter.
Stevenson, the 67th projected player, is rostered in 93-percent of leagues but only starting in 52-percent. He ran all over the Cincinnati Bengals. Stevenson finished Week 1 with 120 rushing yards on 4.8 yards per carry. But it wasn’t just the counting stats– Stevenson earned a 77.3 PFF rush grade and ranked in the top 3 among running backs in yards after contact per attempt (min. 10 attempts). Not only will Stevenson earn the rushing volume (25 attempts in Week 1), but Stevenson also earned three targets. The Patriots are favored at home in Week 2 versus Seattle. This will set up Stevenson for a solid Week 2 reprisal.
BONUS: Taysom Hill – TE New Orleans Saints
After off-season controversy regarding Hill’s positional allocation, the Saints finally settled on declaring him a tight end. To be fair, most Saints beat writers believe that Hill should be considered more of a fullback or running back.
Hill is rostered in 49-percent of leagues. However, he is only starting in 10-percent. Hill earned six touches in the route of Carolina. However, better days are ahead against a Dallas Cowboys who recently drubbed the Cleveland Browns. Fantasy gamers should expect a tougher game script. This will give Hill more red zone touches. Dallas is favored by 6.5 points at home. In fantasy football Week 2, Hill is a sneaky play.
