We have had a GENERATIONAL run of running backs who have been featured in this article series so far this season. Tank Bigsby, Roschon Johnson, Chuba Hubbard, Chase Brown and Bucky Irving have been the most notable. We wrote about them here BEFORE their breakout games! Luckily for the audience, we are back at it for Week 6, finding breakout players before the breakout happens. So without further adieu, let’s dive in!
Blake Corum, Los Angeles Rams: 19-percent Owned
The Blake Corum experience has been less than thrilling through the first five weeks of the season. He’s carried the ball just 13 times this season and has received carries in only two games. That said, I think he has in the second half of the season.
I would like to thank Emo Cowboy from the Fantasy Sanctuary for enlightening me with this take because I 100-percent agree with it. It feels like the Rams did indeed have plans for Corum to be a lot more involved in this backfield going into the season. However, when the Rams lost all of their starting offensive linemen (Joe Noteboom, Alaric Jackson and Steve Avila), they decided they couldn’t risk a rookie running back in pass protection. So they have been cautious, explaining why Kyren Williams and Ronnie Rivers getting more run. But in Week 5, Blake Corum got five carries, two of which were on the goal line. Rivers got zero.
The Rams drafted Corum in the third round. I don’t think he’s done anything to lose the coaching staff’s trust. And if Kyren Williams does happen to go down at any point this season, Corum will be that next guy up. It may not be this week or next week, but I guarantee Blake Corum will be a guy you wish you had on the end of your bench.
Rico Dowdle, Dallas Cowboys: 52-percent owned
There was no bigger hater of Rico Dowdle in the offseason than me, but even I have to concede that Dowdle is the RB1 in the Dallas offense. Dowdle has continued to get more and more opportunities as the season has gone along. We saw that in full effect on Sunday Night Football as Dowdle had 20 carries and two catches for 104 yards and a touchdown. That touchdown came on a play where Dowdle lined up in the slot and ran a corner route to perfection. Not many RBs have that in their bag.
On an offense that lacks playmakers, I think Dowdle could definitely be a guy they lean on more as the season goes along. That is especially true when you consider the fact that Ezekiel Elliott hasn’t had 7-plus carries in a game since Week 1 and Hunter Luepke is really only in there for pass protection. Luepke hasn’t had a single game with more than two carries. Dowdle is 100-percent their guy going forward. If the Dallas offense can figure out a way to be more efficient, Dowdle will be a huge beneficiary.
Tyrone Tracy Jr., New York Giants: 18-percent owned
In his first game as a starter, Tyrone Tracy Jr. proved that he can be a real threat in the NFL. He finished with 18 carries for 129 yards against the Seahawks in Week 5. He probably could have had a touchdown too, but instead the Giants decided to give the ball to Eric Gray. Gray fumbled on the goal line, and the Seahawks returned it 99 yards for a touchdown. Gray ended the game with just four carries for four yards.
Devin Singletary may not be available for Week 6 against the Bengals, but even if he is, Tracy Jr. earned a lot more week-to-week carries regardless of who’s healthy. We could definitely be looking at a Tracy backfield takeover sooner rather than later.
