The Philadelphia Eagles have signed free agent running back Saquon Barkley to a three-year deal
Saquon Barkley and the Philadelphia Eagles have agreed to a 3-year $36.75 million contract. The former Giants’ running back is staying in the division and gets a big pay day. Barkley will now be a part of arguably the most talented skill position group in the entire NFL. The question will be how they pair together for a team that fell apart down the stretch last season.
This move doesn’t make a lot of sense considering the team has other problems right now. Particularly on the defensive side of the ball where the Eagles struggled in 2023. Going forward, it will be difficult to keep Jalen Hurts, AJ Brown, DeVonta Smith, and Barkley all together long term. Great teams already paying a premium at the quarterback position generally don’t make this kind of move, so this is puzzling.
For fantasy purposes this situation is extremely hard to judge too. Brown and Smith are two of the most talented wide receivers in the league and the addition of Barkley is going to take the ball more out of their hands. Additionally, Hurts has never consistently targeted the running back position in the passing game, and he will vulture touchdowns away from Barkley too. This feels like a situation where it’s going to be hard for all of these players to deliver on a week in, week out basis in 2024.
