San Fransisco traded quarterback Trey Lance to Dallas Cowboys for 2024 fourth-round pick

After much speculation, Trey Lance has been traded from the San Francisco 49ers to the Dallas Cowboys for a 2024 fourth-round pick. The writing appeared on the wall for Lance after falling to No. 3 on the depth chart behind teammates Brock Purdy and Sam Darnold. He will now look for a fresh start and learn behind veteran quarterback Dak Prescott. Given the state of the Cowboys’ depth chart, Lance will step in and immediately take over the backup quarterback duties.

Between college and the NFL, Lance has attempted fewer than 500 passes. Whether it be having his 2020 collegiate season canceled or injuries, luck hasn’t been on the side of the young quarterback. Regardless, the 49ers haven’t seen enough practice this off-season to feel confident giving him playing time. They traded him for pennies on the dollar instead after spending three first-round picks to move up in the 2020 NFL Draft.

Unfortunately, Lance’s fantasy football value going forward looks bleak. He has two years left on his rookie contract, and he will be playing behind one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. Given Lance’s age, he still has a chance to resurrect his career as a number of quarterbacks have had success later in their careers. However, this doesn’t make him more than a dynasty fantasy football stash, and his 2023 value will be minimal barring injury to Dak Prescott.
