Bryce Young is the starting quarterback for the NFL's Carolina Panthers. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, but moved to Pasadena, California and played high school football at Cathedral High School in Los Angeles. Young was a five-star recruit and the No. 1 quarterback recruit in the 2020 class. He committed to play college football at the University of Alabama. He was the 2021 Heisman Trophy winner, and finished with a 23-4 college record, the 8th winningest QB in Alabama history. Young met all expectations at Alabama, but failed to win a National Championship as a starting quarterback. He was part of the Alabama championship team in 2020 while backing up Mac Jones.
An unquestioned talent, the concerns about Young center around his size. He measures 5-10, and weighed in just above 200-pounds (204) at the NFL Combine. The Carolina Panthers saw enough in Young's college profile to trade up to and select the former Crimson Tide quarterback as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 Draft. He started right away as the Panthers' quarterback in his rookie season in new head coach Frank Reich's offense, and it was an utter failure. The Panthers and Young ranked at the bottom of the barrel in nearly every statistical offensive category in 2023. The team averaged less than 14 points a game.
David Tepper made a massive overhaul of the teams offensive infrastructure by hiring Dave Canales who succeeded with Baker Mayfield and Russell Wilson. He also brought in a fresh new batch of skill position players such as Diontae Johnson, Jonathan Brooks, Ja'Tavion Sanders, and additions to the offensive line. With a better supporting cast, and better coaching, there is a slim possibility that 2023 could be a distant memory in Bryce Young's career arc.
