With plenty of team planning ahead of them, the Carolina Panthers expect to move on from tight end Hayden Hurst.
Joe Person reports that the Carolina Panthers are planning to move on from Hayden Hurst. Hurst had 4.7 fantasy points per game which was 32nd at the tight end position in 2023. Hurst has had some health concerns that could make him consider his options beyond playing in the National Football League any further.
For the Panthers, this is a signal they are moving on from a player who wasn’t in their long-term plans. With new head coach Dave Canales and new general manager Dan Morgan looking to mold the Panthers to their new identity, the pair will need to find a tight end either in free agency or the upcoming NFL draft.
Noah Fant and Hunter Henry are free agent options that come to mind. With no first-round pick, the Panthers don’t pick until 33rd in the NFL draft, and have more pressing concerns at other positions. Regardless of the route taken expect the new tight end for the Panthers to be an upgrade upgrade over Hayden Hurst.

Hayden Hurst Has Been Diagnosed with Post Traumatic Amnesia
Per an independent neurologist, Carolina tight end Hayden Hurst has been diagnosed with Post Traumatic Amnesia due to a hit he took in week 9 vs the Chicago Bears. Jerry Hurst, Hayden’s father, confirmed the diagnosis on X and added, “Slow recovery, don’t know when he’ll be back.”
Hurst has missed the last three weeks while being in the concussion protocol. On Wednesday, Hurst returned to practice in a limited capacity. Based on the severity of the injury, expect Hurst to miss this week, if not the rest of the season. Post-traumatic amnesia is when a person forgets parts of what happened before and after an injury. Carolina isn’t playing for anything and with the way the league is handling concussions, I expect the Panthers to be cautious. Hurst signed a three-year deal in the off-season with $13 million guaranteed.
While Hurst has been out we have seen a split of reps between Tommy Tremble, Ian Thomas, and Stephen Sullivan. Tremble is the one to consider in the deepest of leagues. In the three weeks Hurst has been out, Tremble has a 53% route participation with an 8% target share. Tremble was a 2021 3rd-round pick with an 85th percent burst score.
