Drake Maye, the 2024 3rd overall pick, is set to start this weekend in the Patriots’ matchup against the Texans.
In the words of Justin Timberlake, it’s gonna be Maye! Drake Maye officially tapped for his season debut, according to Ian Rapoport. This news comes after Jacoby Brissett’s dismal outing against weakened division rival, the Miami Dolphins, where he threw for only 160 yards, no TDs on 52.9% completion percentage.
It does remain to be seen how he will fair behind that Offensive Line, but with the added element of his legs, look for him to run, either on designed plays or scramble drills. You would have to assume this is an upgrade for the pass catchers, but mostly Ja’Lynn Polk (who was a heel away from scoring on Sunday) and Demario Douglas (the team’s leader in targets for Recieivers). It also could make Hunter Henry a decent streaming option at TE, since the position is in a sort of wasteland right now.
For now, keep expectations tempered for the Rookie, but given some time and reps, he could potentially make a decent play later in the year.

New England Patriots veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett ...
Head Coach Jerod Mayo said he’s decided Jacoby Brissett gives the Patriots the best chance to win right now and will be the Patriots starter.
Mayo wouldn’t offer a timeline for when a potential changing of the guard might take place between rookie Drake Maye and Brissett. While they’ve always wanted Brissett to be the starter for the beginning of the season due to poor offensive line play that they don’t want to subject Maye to this early on in his career, Maye clearly outplayed Brissett in the preseason and made the decision harder than it had to be.
Brissett has struggled to produce any meaningful fantasy production throughout his career and has a record of 18-30 as a starter. It’s only a matter of time before he permanently cedes the starting role to Maye, who offers tremendous upside with his big arm and mobile play style. Brissett should be avoided in all formats and savvy fantasy managers shouldn’t be afraid to target Maye at his lowest cost right now before he’s inevitably named starter. For now, this news dampers the immediate outlook for all Patriots position players.
New England’s veteran QB sustained an injury after landing on his throwing shoulder following a sack.
In Sunday’s preseason finale against the Washington Commanders, New England Patriots quarterback Jacoby Brissett sustained an injury to his right shoulder after being sacked on his first and only drive of the game. Although Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo said that the team elected to sit him out for the rest of the night out of caution, Brissett — along with the majority of New England’s starters — was only expected to play a drive or two anyway. In his relief, rookie quarterback Drake Maye shined — completing 13 of 20 passing attempts for 126 yards and a touchdown.
While Brissett’s injury might not be as serious as it was initially believed to be, Drake Maye’s performance only makes the quarterback battle in New England even more enticing. The North Carolina product has largely outperformed Brissett throughout the preseason, and any sort of missed time by the ninth-year veteran could thrust Maye into a starting role sooner than expected. While Brissett’s already-low fantasy ceiling becomes even murkier with his latest injury, Maye suddenly becomes a hot commodity — even in an offense that is expected to be one of the league’s worst. Furthermore, the ceilings of New England’s skill position group — highlighted by running back Rhamondre Stevenson, wide receivers Ja’Lynn Polk, Kendrick Bourne, DeMario Douglas, and K.J. Osborn, and tight end Hunter Henry — figure to be raised if Drake Maye is named the starter in Foxboro.
New England head coach Jerod Mayo stated earlier today that “It’s a true competition, and I would say at this current point, Drake has outplayed Jacoby.” for the starting quarterback position.
Head Coach Jerod Mayo declares that the starting quarterback competition is still up for grabs even though Drake Maye has outplayed Jacoby Brissett so far this pre-season. Brissett injured his shoulder during last night’s pre-season finale and left the game early. Maye came on and provided a spark for the Patriots offense, by throwing for 126 yards and a touchdown. Drake is also a threat to make plays with his legs and he rushed three times for 17 yards. Mayo also claimed that there are other factors when deciding which player will be the starting quarterback when the season begins next week.
Brissett reunited with his original team the Patriots this offseason by signing a one-year $8 million contract. After signing Brissett, the Patriots drafted Maye third overall in April’s NFL Draft. The rookie has made strides throughout camp to make this battle more competitive than originally thought.
Depending on the severity of Brissett’s shoulder injury, the Patriots might be starting Maye sooner rather than later. Regardless, it’s only a matter of time before Drake will be under center for the Patriots. In dynasty leagues Maye must be rostered in all league formats. In two-quarterback and super-flex leagues Maye has a current ADP of 151 and must be drafted as a QB3/QB4 for now.
Multiple reports state that the New England Patriots could lean on Jacoby Brissett as their starting quarterback all season.
Due to the Patriots having a shoddy offensive line, the organization’s brass could have Jacoby Brissett start all year long. With previous quarterback Mac Jones getting his confidence knocked out of him in recent years, the Patriots might be hesitant to start rookie Drake Maye to prevent him from having the same fate. Brissett signed with his former team earlier this offseason after playing for multiple teams over the last several years.
In eight seasons, Brissett has thrown for 10,574 yards, rushed for 915 yards, totaled 66 touchdowns, and 23 interceptions. When Brissett has played at least 15 games, he’s averaged 2,883 yards passing, 14 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. Last season in Washington, Brissett had zero starts and only played in three games.
This Patriots offense may be one that dynasty and fantasy managers should avoid. In single-quarterback leagues, Brissett must be left on the waiver wire, and only be considered rostering in two-quarterback and super-leagues as a late-round pick. Even then Brissett is likely a couple of bad outings away from being replaced by Maye anyway.
Jacoby Brissett remains in the lead as Patriots Day 1 starter.
New England Patriots first year head coach has come out and made it very clear that they are playing the long game with their approach to their 2024 1st round selection of Drake Maye. Mayo has reiterated that Brissett remains “the most pro ready guy they have” and it is looking like he will be the opening day starter. The 31 year old who was first selected by the Patriots in 2016 has performed admirably in fill in duty multiple times, first with Tom Brady, then in relief of Andrew Luck with the Colts and Deshaun Watson in Cleveland. Brissett also has familiarity with offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt from their days in Cleveland together.
Brissett has proven to be a solid yet unspectacular option as a starter. He is a stabilizing force for Pats receiving options, and could provide bumps in value as a seasoned vet who knows how to distribute the ball. He will not be rostered in any 1 QB formats, but is an absolutely great stash in any multi QB formats as a low end QB2.
