Colts 53: Woods Season Over, Hull Cut

The Colts placed Jelani Woods on season ending injured reserve while cutting Evan Hull and Laquon Treadwell.

Jelani Woods will now miss two consecutive seasons due to separate injuries. While he’s one of the most physically gifted tight ends ever from an athletic testing perspective, his NFL future is in jeopardy, especially considering that there were reports he was struggling to stand out in the tight end room before suffering his turf-toe injury.

Evan Hull getting cut demonstrates that the Colts have strong faith in Trey Sermon to rebound from the hamstring injury he suffered in the preseason and fill the RB2 role behind Jonathan Taylor. Tyler Goodson remains on the roster as the RB3 and change-of-pace back. The Colts choosing to keep Goodson instead of Hull gives fantasy managers clarity that Hull shouldn’t be on fantasy rosters.

Laquon Treadwell was signed earlier this offseason and always projected as a camp body who wouldn’t stick around for the season. While he’s a former first rounder, he’s now 29 years old and yet to produce a fantasy-relevant season. Treadwell shouldn’t be on fantasy rosters in any format.

Update: Jelani Woods toe surgery successful, out 4 months.

Colts TE Jelani Woods underwent surgery to repair turf toe, expected to be out 4 months.

Colts 3rd year tight end Jelani Woods is expected to miss 4 months after surgery to repair his injured toe, described as grade 3 turf toe.  The Colts say they are hopeful that he can return near the end of the season to aid in a playoff push.

The Colts have had high expectations for Jelani Woods since drafting him, but they have had to shelve those expectations since he arrived in Indianapolis due to injuries.  The latest news out of Colts camp is that they will have to continue to wait to see their tight end on the field due to toe surgery for the Colts third year TE.  Woods is expected to miss 3-6 months with surgery on what has been described as a grade 3 turf toe.

Jelani Woods was a popular off season sleeper because of his enormous measurables and athleticism.  He will now likely miss a second consecutive year because of injury, and the promising career is being derailed by injury.  Woods was going undrafted in redraft leagues, and in bestball he was TE32.

Jelani Woods is Colts Preferred Option for Tight Ends
3 months ago

Jelani Woods is the preferred TE option for Colts.

Hop aboard the Jelani Woods hype train! As he enters his third year, Woods is poised to lead the tight end room. Despite missing the entirety of 2023 due to a hamstring issue, he initially showcased his potential with 25 receptions for 312 yards and 3 touchdowns during his rookie campaign.

Standing tall at 6’7″ and weighing 253 lbs, Woods possesses uncommon size for his position, complemented by impressive speed (4.61 40-yard dash). With over 800 yards of combined production among tight end options last season, Woods, if he can maintain his health, presents a tantalizing breakout opportunity in dynasty startups and remains overlooked in redraft leagues.

Jelani Woods- Impressing in OTAs

Jelani Woods is back at OTAs and catching passes from Anthony Richardson after missing the entire 2023 season with Hamstring injuries.

Woods had a promising rookie season and was expected by many to breakout in 2023. Injuries derailed last season, but early reports from OTAs indicate that he looks fully healthy and projects as the starting tight end for the Colts in 2024.

Woods has tantalizing physical gifts, boasting a 4.61 40-yard dash standing at 6’7″. His combination of size and athleticism earned him a perfect 10.0 RAS (relative athletic score) ranking first among all tight ends.

For fantasy managers, it’d be a fools move to give up on a player as intriguing as Woods before the 2024 season. Keep an eye out for more reports on his progression throughout the offseason, as he’s a name that could climb redraft and best ball rankings and warrant a selection at the end of drafts.

Jelani Woods- Starting Season on IR

Colts Tight End Jelani Woods is still dealing with a hamstring injury and is set to miss at least the first 4 games of the season on IR.

Jelani Woods is as intriguing as it gets from an athleticism perspective. While some are hoping for a 2nd year breakout from the Tight End, he recently re-aggravated a pretty significant hamstring from earlier this preseason. This means Woods will miss at least the first four games of 2023 on IR, and we’ll have to hope it doesn’t linger any longer into the season.

The Colts chose to enter the season with 4 other active Tight Ends on their 53-man roster. Of the remaining Tight Ends for the Colts, Mo Alie-Cox is expected to lead the way the first 4 weeks and poses the most tantalizing physical gifts in terms of PlayerProfiler’s Athleticism Score. That said, you can expect all 4 of their active Tight Ends to rotate in and share snaps.

A rotation scenario, and a mobile, rookie QB doesn’t bode well for this Tight End platoon’s fantasy production. Fantasy managers shouldn’t rush to roster any of the 4 other active Tight Ends currently on the Colts roster.
