Eagles Release Veteran WR John Ross from Practice Squad
The Philadelphia Eagles have released veteran wide receiver John Ross from their practice squad on Tuesday. Ross, a former first-round pick of the Cincinnati Bengals in the 2017 NFL Draft, had initially joined the Eagles this offseason following a tryout at rookie minicamp. Although he was waived during final roster cuts, he was signed to the Eagles’ practice squad in September.
Ross briefly retired in July 2022. John Ross, drafted ninth overall by the Bengals in 2017, has recorded 62 catches for 957 yards and 11 touchdowns in 37 career games. Known for his blazing 4.22-second 40-yard dash, he last played in the NFL during the 2021 season. It has been a disappointing career for Ross but we shall see if any teams may look to add Ross in the upcoming days.

The Philadelphia Eagles have signed wide receiver John Ross to a one-year deal.
The Eagles have decided to kick the tires and bring in John Ross for one last ride. This transaction comes after DeVante Parker announced that he will be retiring from the NFL after nine seasons. Ross previously held the record for the fastest 40-yard dash at the NFL combine with a time of 4.22. His record fell this past March after Xavier Worthy broke his record with a blazing 4.21 time.
Ross hasn’t seen any regular season game action since 2021 with the Giants. The veteran receiver has played in just 37 games since being drafted by the Bengals in 2017. During that span, he has totaled 62 receptions for 957 yards and 11 touchdowns.
The Eagles are set in the receiving game with A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, Dallas Goedert, and newly acquired Saquon Barkley coming out of the backfield. Ross will compete to be the WR3 for Philadelphia. Dynasty managers can take a flier pick on Ross in the later rounds of deeper league start-up drafts or pick him off waivers to see if he can get acclimated with the offense. Should either Brown or Smith happen to get injured, Ross could find himself in a great opportunity to make a splash in 2024, and if that should happen sell high as soon as possible.
Retired speedster John Ross will participate in Eagles rookie camp to show he still has some juice.
Records are meant to be broken. Xavier Worthy did just that when he ran a 4.21 to break John Ross’ 4.22 40-yard time from 2017. That may have lit a fire in Ross, who will be joining rookie camp with the Philadelphia Eagles to show he has some left in the tank. The explosive 28 year-old has had an underwhelming NFL career with the Cincinnati Bengals, the NY Giants, and most recently the Kansas City Chiefs, from which he retired in 2023.
Across five seasons with the Bengals and Giants, Ross managed to put up only 62 receptions for 957 yards and 11 TDs in 37 games played. While his measurables at the 2017 Combine blew teams away and convinced the Bengals to draft him 9th overall, his constant injuries have kept him off the field, and all that speed was never realized.
The Eagles are not strangers to giving retired players another chance, most recently when they signed Julio Jones mid-season last year. It remains to be seen how Ross will be able to contribute to a crowded WR room with its recently extended stars, A.J. Brown and Devonta Smith. At his best, Ross can blaze past coverages, but only if he can stay on the field.
