Mike Gesicki is a tight end. He was a three-sport athlete in high school, where he played football, basketball, and volleyball. Gesicki plied his college trade with Penn State, and in four seasons with the Nittany Lions, he posted college stats of 129 receptions for 1,481 yards and 15 touchdowns.
Putting it simply, Mike Gesicki profiled as an athletic freak in the predraft process leading up to the 2018 NFL Draft. He was above the 95th percentile in all key workout metrics, with a 99th percentile burst, 98th percentile agility and a 100th percentile wingspan. He posted a 95th percentile 40 time of 4.54. Gesicki was the closest a prospect has come to matching Vernon Davis, from an athletic standpoint. The Miami Dolphins took Gesicki in the second round of the draft.
In four seasons with the Dolphins, Gesicki has 199 receptions for 2,255 yards with 13 touchdowns. He has operated as a downfield target for his quarterbacks, finishing No.3 among all tight ends in deep balls in both 2019 and 2020. Gesicki has the third most Unrealised Air Yards over the last three seasons. Gesicki practically lived out of the slot in 2021, playing the most snaps among all tight ends inside with 412. He was No.3 with 485 routes run and commanded an 18.6 percent target share. Operating down the field has not given Gesicki many opportunities to show off his athleticism and rack up yards after the catch. In 2021, Gesicki was No.21 in YAC with 222, a career-high total. He committed just three drops last season.
