Tre McKitty was born in West Chapel, Florida and attended Wesley Chapel High School for one year and then transferred to IMG Academy, a prep school, resulting in him being heavily recruited by many college teams. At first, McKitty committed to Oregon in July of 2016 but then decommitted and ultimately committed to the Florida State Seminoles on December 12, 2016. McKitty spent three seasons with the Seminoles amassing 50 catches and 520 receiving yards across 20 games played. He transferred as a graduate to Georgia for the 2020 season. He played only 4 games for the Bulldogs after sustaining a preseason knee injury. He caught at least one catch in each of his four games and finished with six receptions for 108 receiving yards and a touchdown. Despite this injury shortened season, McKitty secured a Senior Bowl invite.
While invited to the 2021 NFL Combine, Tre McKitty declined to test instead opting to showcase his athleticism at Georgia’s Pro Day. There McKitty ran a 4.71 second 40 time, and above average mark for the tight end position. He also showcased his freakishly large 11-inch hand size. The Los Angeles Chargers ultimately selected McKitty as the 97th pick in the 2021 NFL draft.
Like most rookie tight ends McKitty had a difficult time seeing the field playing in eleven games and amassing only eight targets while posting a 25.7% snap share. McKitty will look to continue his growth as a tight end over the course of his rookie contract with the Chargers.
