Fantasy Football Analyst and Assistant Editor

Joel is a Senior Fantasy Football Analyst and Assistant Editor at PlayerProfiler. He focuses on studying how the NFL is evolving and how teams draft and trade, invest capital and team-build. Joel places high value on crafting well-researched content based on trends that impact fantasy production and ADP. He aims to produce analysis that is tuned in to emerging trends in the NFL, eschewing analysis that is overly “micro” (player takes) or “macro” (long-term trends). Things change fast in football.

Joel is from Wichita, Kansas, and got into fantasy baseball as a teenager, pre-internet. Later, as an adult, he was coerced into joining his first 10-team fantasy football league by some neighbors and friends. He protested, wanting to preserve his fandom of “real football” (#ChiefsKingdom). Nonetheless, he was soon listening to fantasy content in his sleep and building a monster player database. Now he spends all his free time (and a lot of work time) drafting and curating multiple dynasty and best ball leagues and producing PlayerProfiler content as a fantasy football analyst.

As Writer and Editor for the greatest sports media outlet on the planet, Joel is responsible for pushing out content that is clean, incisive and – of course – actionable! Joel is dedicated to providing the PlayerProfiler audience with the best user experience possible. He works hard every day to ensure that the reader gets the best quality content possible!

Player Velocity: More Meta-Trends for One-QB Leagues

by Joel Ybarra
What we define as “player velocity” in this study is how much a player’s ADP changed from one season to the next. In 2021, Jonathan Taylor reached high speed. Fantasy gamers were selecting him in round three his rookie season (2020). He then shot up into the late first round in 2021 drafts. Taylor finished RB1 in half-PPR points per game (minimum twelve games played) in 2021.

Meta-Trends for One-Quarterback Drafts

by Joel Ybarra
Fantasy analysis most often takes on a micro-perspective. We focus on which wide receiver or running back will finish number one overall at their position or which player will outdo another in a given positional tier. These ranking and tier discussions are helpful starting points, but to develop a robust draft plan we need to zoom out and take on a meta-perspective.

Ambiguous WR Situations: A Fantasy Football Skeleton Key

by Joel Ybarra
No less than three league-winning wide receivers emerged from ambiguous situations in 2021. You won’t have trouble naming them. Cooper Kupp, Ja’Marr Chase and Deebo Samuel all recorded top-5 fantasy seasons in 2021 and ascended to wide receiver royalty. They all came from truly ambiguous WR situations: 2021 was just one season. But over the last six, trends have developed which have implications for fantasy WRs in the future. More top-scoring players will emerge from ambiguous WR situations in 2022 and beyond. The rookie hype is real in fantasy, but the hype is well-founded. The NFL is enamored with rookie wide receivers, too. There were 17 wide receivers taken in the first three rounds of the 2022 NFL draft, tied with 1994 and 2007 for most rookie WRs drafted in the first three rounds ever. Fantasy drafting is all about finding edges. Many fantasy managers move away from ambiguity because they equate it with uncertainty. Actually drafting wide receivers from ambiguous situations is a surer thing than seemingly more certain situations.  Move toward ambiguity when drafting receivers!

The Great RB Dead Zone Resurrection of 2022 is Upon Us

by Joel Ybarra
The running back “dead zone” is dead. Dead zone running backs have traditionally been those backs drafted in rounds three through six of fantasy drafts the past two seasons. But a shift is about to take place. The RB Dead Zone will be the fertile ground out of which multiple RB1s will be harvested in fantasy leagues in 2022. Start adjusting your draft plans now. If you are really concerned about missing out on a first-round running back, keep in mind Leonard Fournette, Tony Pollard and A.J. Dillon will also still be available after round 6 (past the dead zone). There are plenty of upside RB’s available in rounds 3-8 in 2022, leaving you tons of flexibility to not take running backs in rounds 1-2. The RB dead zone is the place to be in 2022! IT'S ALIIIIIIVE!!!
